If\nassumptions can be made regarding the direction of effects\nbetween the assessed variables, this has to be considered in\nthe analysis. The functions in this package implement the novel\napproach CIEE (causal inference using estimating equations;\nKonigorski et al., 2018, ) for\nestimating and testing the direct effect of an exposure\nvariable on a primary outcome, while adjusting for indirect\neffects of the exposure on the primary outcome through a\nsecondary intermediate outcome and potential factors\ninfluencing the secondary outcome. The underlying directed\nacyclic graph (DAG) of this considered model is described in\nthe vignette. CIEE can be applied to studies in many different\nfields, and it is implemented here for the analysis of a\ncontinuous primary outcome and a time-to-event primary outcome\nsubject to censoring. CIEE uses estimating equations to obtain\nestimates of the direct effect and robust sandwich standard\nerror estimates.
